Edna Whitmore,  “The Teachers and the Editor”

The Stewartsville Record, Stewartsville, Missouri, April 3, 1908
Once the Editor of the Record Came to the teachers of our school, To find some one to write his paper, While he allowed his pen to cool. We know it wasn't his busy pen, But himself who wanted a rest. The teachers were asked to take the task, And they promised to do their best. Now among teachers and pupils There will be a fuss and fume To write for his subscribers, A glorious editorial boom, While the printer with great cunning Has succeeded in getting a rest, The teachers, I'm sure, didn't think of this, When they promised to do their best. Among the writers, while they're working, There will be a whirl and bustle. Among the readers while they're reading There will be a stir and rustle. Thus the teachers will be working, While the printer takes a rest. They didn't think of this, I'm sure, When they promised to do their best. They think it is fun at present, But, I'm sure they won't at last, When the papers are all printed, And the fame and glory's past They will see they've had the worry, While the printer's had the rest, And, I know, they'll wish they hadn't Promised they would do their best.
Added May 11, 2026. Reading "fuss and fume" for "fuss and f..." to satisfy the rhyme. The scan is quite bad. Whitmore is listed as "Class of '08". JV
