“The Suburbanite”
The Baltimore Sun, Baltimore, Maryland, July 15, 1908
Four sets of fly screens—
Yonder he goes,
A handbox, a suitcase,
A furlong of hose;
A rake and a shovel,
A lawnmower blade—
The happy suburbanite,
Hiking for shade!
Sweet is his whistle,
Oh, hear his soft lay,
As there with the mower
He canters away;
Fighting the pusley,
Oh, watch how he speeds,
Keeping his garden plot
Free of the weeds!
Horse mint and henbane
And plantain galore;
Pigweed and dandelion
Clear to the door:
Happy suburbanite—
Heav'n give you rest,
When weary of digging
You lie on earth's breast!
